Bed bugs: bites at night, answers by morning

Bed bugs are on our list of 24-hour emergencies, because every night of waiting lets them spread. We find where they live and treat the whole room properly.

Chapter 01

Bites in a row, rust spots on the seams

Lakewood rentals, Seaside Heights summer houses and ordinary family bedrooms all get them, and none of that says anything about how clean the home is. The usual signs are itchy welts in a line or cluster that appear overnight, small rust-colored spots on the sheets and tiny dark specks along the mattress seam. Bites alone prove nothing, since other pests cause them too.

What settles it is evidence: shed skins about the size of an apple seed, live adults hiding in the piping of the mattress, behind the headboard, inside the screw holes of the bed frame. They travel in luggage, secondhand furniture and the seams of clothing, so a recent trip or a new couch is worth mentioning when you call.

If you are seeing them, do not move your bedding to the couch or another room. Sleeping elsewhere is understandable, but it carries bugs with you. Bag what you can, keep it in the room, and call (732) 527-5770. This is one of our listed emergencies and the line is open around the clock.

Inspection first, treatment second

A technician examines the room that matters most with a light and a flat tool: mattress seams and tags, box spring, bed frame joints, headboard, nightstands, baseboards, outlet covers, the edges of carpets. Then the neighboring rooms, because bed bugs move. Findings are photographed so you can see what is living where, which also decides how far the treatment has to reach.

Treatment is built from that map. Cracks, joints and hiding places get targeted application, and we tell you what to launder, what to bag and what to leave alone. We treat with children and pets in mind, and we explain what the room needs before anyone sleeps in it again, including how to handle mattress covers.

Bed bugs also hide well away from the bed. Behind loose wallpaper, under the lip of a picture frame, inside a clock radio, in the seams of the upholstered chair where someone sits to read: all of these can hold a colony. That is why the whole room is searched thoroughly and not just the mattress, and why the findings sheet runs longer than people expect.

Chapter 03

Following up on a stubborn problem

Bed bugs rarely end in a single visit and we say so plainly. A few that survive or hatch afterward is expected, which is why follow-up matters. Keep the mattress encased, keep the bed pulled slightly away from the wall, and watch for fresh spots on the sheets over the following weeks.

If they come back, so do we, and the retreat costs you nothing extra. That is what the 100% satisfaction guarantee means in practice. Rentals and busy guest houses in the Long Beach Island towns should check beds after each stay, since catching one bug early is far easier than catching a hundred.
