Finding · House, fruit and cluster flies

Flies, traced back to where they breed

Three kinds of flies, three different breeding sites. We work out which one you have, because that decides where the treatment goes.

Chapter 01

Which fly is it, and where did it hatch?

Fly problems are about identification. Small tan flies hovering over the fruit bowl or the sink drain are fruit flies. Larger gray flies buzzing the kitchen window are house flies. Slow, sluggish, golden-haired flies crowding the upstairs windows in Middletown or Tinton Falls on a sunny autumn day are cluster flies, which behave differently from the other two.

Flies do not appear from nowhere. House flies breed in garbage cans, pet waste and rotting organic matter. Fruit flies breed in overripe produce, a film of grime inside a drain, a recycling bin with sweet residue. Cluster flies spend summer in lawns as larvae, then crowd into wall voids in fall to overwinter. A swarm in a closed room can even point to something dead in a wall or attic.

The timing tells you a lot. Fruit flies explode in warm weather and in homes with a compost bucket or a tray of ripening fruit. House flies cluster near the back door and the trash in July and August. Cluster flies arrive on the first cool sunny days of October. Knowing which season you are in narrows the search before we ever walk through the door.

Finding the source on a Resolve visit

We walk the kitchen, the trash area, the drains, the pet areas and the exterior. Outside, we look at where bins sit, whether lids seal, and whether a garage door gap or an attic vent lets cluster flies into the walls. Inside, we check the places a fruit fly can breed unseen: drains, under the refrigerator, behind appliances.

Then we act at the source. A drain needs cleaning rather than spraying, and we explain what to use. Bins get moved or sealed. Where flies are entering, openings are noted and treated. Treatments are selected with family and pets in mind, and an organic route exists for homes that want it.

The photographs we take are of the breeding spot itself, the crack at the eave or the sticky corner under the can, not of the flies. Seeing the source is what makes the habit change stick, and it is the reason most fly calls do not turn into a second call. We would rather you know where they come from than keep treating where they land.

Chapter 03

The follow-up, and the season it returns

House flies and fruit flies tend to drop sharply once the breeding site is gone. Cluster flies are the exception: they hide in walls through winter and may reappear indoors on warm days in late winter. Vacuuming works better than swatting, and the best fix is closing gaps in the fall before they move in.

If flies persist after service, we want to hear about it, even weeks later. Call (732) 527-5770 and we will return under the satisfaction guarantee to treat again at no charge. A restaurant or cafe fighting flies during the summer rush is a separate job, handled through our commercial service.
